Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has become a staple among multiple cultures. There are artists like Rihanna replacing R&B type beats with something containing a more Dubstep essence, along with other artists overhauling their whole style for something that is considered to be Electro. EDM has maintained a mainstream popularity that was thought to never happen by purists. Some feel it has been bastardized by so many who have hopped on the EDM bandwagon, and others feel that it’s sudden surge in popularity is just the tip of the iceberg to something bigger. Instead of focusing on the popularity of EDM as a whole, let us take a different approach to a culture nestled within EDM culture that is truly a force to be reckoned with. Lets take a look at the style they call “Juke”.

EDM got its start in Chicago, when Disco was really big and DJ’s like Frankie Knuckles started playing their own hybrid versions of Disco in warehouses, which eventually started being called House music. So first of we have Chicago to thank for a lot of things: the 90’s Bulls dynasty, deep dish pizza and now giving birth to not only House music but to the entire EDM genre as whole. House music is synonymous with Chicago, and if one is ever fortunate to experience the music culture there will be hard pressed find many other areas as dedicated.

Though House music is a huge part of Chicago, there is a sub-genre that is a huge part of Chicago as well. But it takes up main residency in the South Side. Juke music was a good answer to how those from south side Chicago interpreted the insurgence of popularity of House music. Juke was their way of taking House music, speeding it up and adding a level of “griminess” that was not yet heard by the masses. Coupled with Juke music, you have the ever evolving dance called “footwork”. I would attempt to explain it, but it is one of those things you would have to see to understand. The Juke culture is something that I have never really been able to define, but I remember a trip I took to Chicago one summer and got to see first had how folks a part of the culture got down. The best thing I can say is that I was truly blown away, thus beginning my everlasting love for Chicago and Juke.

When you look at EDM now, you hear about artists that represent Electro, Progressive House, Dubstep and now the overly popular Trap genre. Granted those genres have their bangers, they have been suffering from a case I like to call “genreicness”. A lot of the songs that are popular that are now representatives of the EDM culture have been watered down to sound very similar and appeal to those who really are not interested in the growth of the EDM community. It is unfortunate, because there are a lot of talented artists out there who probably won’t get the time of day because they are not following the trend.

Juke has stayed true to its roots by keeping it heavy and keeping it grimy while making sure that all who listen to it are guaranteed to have a good time. The good thing is that there are some DJ’s/Producers who are breathing new life into Juke music, who are also bringing something new to the table as well. Chicago’s own Dice Beats has been releasing Juke remixes that make me wonder where he has been all this time (for the record Dice‘s “Nothin but a Jukaton Thang“ EP is amazing as well). Then you have folks like MaddJazz, Leatherface and Kaptain Cadillac who are staying consistent by releasing remixes and new sounds that really grasp the essence of Juke and educate listeners to what Juke is as well. The bottom line is that if you are wanting to find something new to listen to, or are just needing a dose of high energy music in your library, then I strongly suggest you check out Juke music.

The EDM genre has been rapidly gaining fans from all over and has shown no sign of slowing down. In the US the east and west coasts both have their respective followings, but it seems like the Midwest has always been considered somewhat “neutral ground”. There are a lot of talented artists popping up from all types of obscure cities and really bringing a new level of intensity and intrigue to the EDM community.

In Cincinnati, Ohio there is a four man crew named Dance Hard Die Hard (DHDH) who have been hard at work being the trend setters in the Cincinnati EDM scene. Though DHDH is still getting all their ducks in a row, they are generating a good amount of discussion as well as loyal following. DHDH is comprised of four members who have a unique style and sound that gives listeners (both new and old) a nice wide variety of music. The talent behind each member of DHDH is something that cannot be ignored. So here is a list of the members and why you should be listening to them.

SMiRK: This guy is one half of the founding party of DHDH and has been in the EDM scene for a long time. Having a vast knowledge of the music that he plays (and even the music he doesn‘t), he is someone who gives his music that “tender love and care“ which is sorely missed in a lot of music today. A Cincinnati native who has a soft spot for Electro, Drum and Bass and Dubstep (among other genres) has been laying waste to any set he plays, and has been dubbed as playing “high energy, feel good music”. SMiRK has been staying consistent with dropping well produced podcasts each with a specific theme (his Summertime Vibes 2k12 podcast has certified banger status written all over it) and dedicating his time to sharing the music that he loves to anyone willing to listen. There is no question that listening to any of SMiRK’s material will get you hype, happy and ready to rage.

KevinSync: The other half of DHDH’s founding fathers, KevinSync is the guy who brings a more “ravey” sound to the table. Being well versed with the 2-Step and Bassline genre, KevinSync is the one to take you back to the rave culture of the 90’s (but only have you experience the good things about that era). Not really limiting himself to just rave music, Kev has an affinity to litter his mixes with an eclectic selection as well as more technical style found in any mix he drops. For anyone wanting to have a serious case of nostalgia, then be sure to bump KevinSync in the whip or anywhere in between.

Twitter

WebsiteBit Flip: This is someone who is taking the “Breaks” genre and breathing new life into it. Having a signature sound and style all his own, Bit Flip could be considered “Mr. Consistency”. He is a DJ who has already garnered a loyal fan base before joining DHDH. Besides from Breaks, Bit Flip enjoys playing some hard hitting Electro along with some good ol’ fashioned Funk and everything else in between. Bit Flip has been in the EDM scene for a while, and has a solid understanding to playing to the crowd without sacrificing his artistic integrity. He is who you want to listen to when you feel the need to have an all around good time.

Twitter

Soundcloud

Hyper Kid: Last but not least is the “Mr. Underdog” himself, Hyper Kid. Truly being unique to Cincinnati in regards to his style, Hyper Kid is one of those DJ’s that you wish you would have seen his set. He brings a more “grimy” style to DHDH, with the type of music he plays along with his play style. Starting off as a “Turntablist” DJ, Hyper Kid has slowly evolved into a sort of jack of all trades DJ. Being able to add elements of Hip-Hop to a House set, he is someone who is all about making people go dumb off of his music. House, Trap and French Disco House tend to be at the top of his genres of choice, but he also loves playing Chicago Juke along with Bmore club music. Hyper Kid is the guy you want to listen to when you are wanting more “rowdy” listening experience.

Soundcloud

Twitter

Tumblr

Though DHDH is still working its way up the ranks, there is no doubt that they will become a household name in the years to come. Dedicated to bringing a musical experience not lacking quality and imagination, Dance Hard Die Hard is most definitely a name you want to keep an eye on.

Be sure to check out the DHDH website for free, new music.

Trap music has been synonymous with the southern rap genre. Though Trap music is more geared towards the “dope boy” culture carrying a heavier bass coupled with a more “gully“ sound, it has gained a surprisingly large fan base within the EDM scene.

The Future Trap Phenomenon.

Trap music has been synonymous with the southern rap genre. Though Trap music is more geared towards the “dope boy” culture carrying a heavier bass coupled with a more “gully“ sound, it has gained a surprisingly large fan base within the EDM scene. I have been a big fan of southern rap (more specifically Trap) since the early Gucci Mane days (its one of my guilty pleasures). Trap has always been that type of music which could make you get hype no matter the situation you are in, but recently there have been EDM producers and DJ’s taking an invested interest in the Trap sound.

When Bird Peterson dropped the “Drankenstein” series (a style which infused dirty south rap with trance music), some could say that he planted the seeds of EDM artists playing Trap music in their DJ sets. Others may claim it was the La Roux x Gucci Mane mashup which appeared on the Major Lazer mixtape “Lazerproof”. But the growing popularity of the Trap genre within electronica is something that can’t be ignored. Diplo has released a Sleigh Bells remix to their song “Demons” which has tons of “Trapish” elements, and Bird Peterson released a Drankenstein remix to Avicii’s hit “Levels”, so it is safe to say that the EDM community is truly embracing the Trap movement.

Though there are a lot of Trap remixes of Indie or “hipster minded” songs, the original pieces that are hitting the dance floors throughout the country are truly capturing the essence of the Trap sound. There is one artist in particular who goes by the name “UZ” who has been making nothing but bangers since his inception. UZ recently released a free EP entitled “Trap Shire within electronica is something that can’t be ignored. Diplo has released a Sleigh Bells remix to their song “Demons” which has tons of “Trapish” elements, and Bird Peterson released a Drankenstein remix to Avicii’s hit “Levels”, so it is safe to say that the EDM community is truly embracing the Trap movement.t: 6-9” (which can be downloaded off the Mad Decent website). For anyone wanting to hear some heavy bass pounding, head nodding Trap music with an interesting twist, then I suggest that you go ahead and download the EP right now.Though the Trap phenomenon is still in its early stages, there is one thing for sure, which is Trap music may be the official sound for EDM kids to get crunk to.

To download UZ’s free “Trap Shit: 6-9″ then click here

In October 2009, one of my most highly respected groups – Copeland - announced that they would be disbanding following a farewell tour the following Spring. The AbsolutePunk.net post announcing the break-up generated over 600 comments, the majority of which reflected shock and sadness at the revelation. My feelings were the same.

Copeland created music that was, for lack of a better term, life-affirming. It’s the kind of music that invites you to listen – alone in your room, driving down the road, somewhere focus is possible. It requires reflection to appreciate and it carries none of the flashy affectation that has become the hallmark of so much music today. Aaron Marsh’s falsetto and the band’s ability to combine subtlety and intensity in the same record gave the band a platform that none of Copeland’s contemporaries have yet been able to share.

Read through the lyrics of any Copeland original and you will find a thoughtful commentary on life, love, sadness, hope, and despair. Soaking in the words and the heartfelt effort behind turning them into song has proven cathartic during some of the most emotional and stressful times in my life and I know I’m not alone in that.

I was able to see Copeland live twice before it was all said and done. No matter the bands touring with them – whether they were punk, rock, or some other genre – a hush always fell over the crowd when Copeland took the stage. There was a sort of reverence among Copeland fans that held everyone in the room at rapt attention when Aaron sat down at the piano.

I believe Copeland’s music will serve to inspire a new generation of songwriters willing to bare their hearts to their listeners.

Thanks for the memories, guys. I think you’ll be proud of your legacy.

FOR THE GOOD is a service based organization offering screen printing and design with the sole purpose of working for the good of those in need.

The owners of FTG felt called to use their gifts to help bring awareness and raise funds for organizations that are making a difference every day in the lives of others.

Their vision is simple, Print and Design for the good of those in need.

A portion of every dollar earned will be used to bring awareness and fund partnering organizations that are dedicated to help anyone in need. A new organization to help will be selected monthly.

The current partnering organization is FIVE STONES INTERNATIONAL which helps sexually trafficked and abused children. Human trafficking is a worldwide epidemic that affects everyone, even people here in America. In fact, the revenue generated from sex trafficking, involving minors alone, exceeds $5 billion and has been reported in all 50 states. It is the goal of both For The Good and Five Stones International to shine a light on this problem and create some positive change.

That’s why I’ve chosen to share the full Universal Declaration of Human Rights with you today. I think every human on this planet should read this and live by it. More people need to know about this document. The more people know and talk, the sooner human rights will be at the top of everyone’s list of things that MUST CHANGE NOW!

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as follows, which was and still is a milestone document in the history of human rights.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Rad stuff is happening at TRR and I want to tell you about it.

The title of this new column is somewhat ironic, as I have no actual office. My “desk” is more often than not my cluttered kitchen table. I’m sure the scene is much the same for many of our writers. See, The Record Rebellion is run/written by people scattered all over North America and Europe. We’re a bunch of music and arts nerds who managed to meet and create something to share our passion for it all. Some of us have a background in the music industry, others are fans, others are seeking a career in the business. But regardless of our personal histories, we all love talking about music and film while geeking out over our latest discoveries. If you can identify with that at all, welcome home.

To that end, I’m excited about the artists we’ve been able to profile lately. If you haven’t seen yet, we have Burbank CA’s Back Pocket Memory guest blogging with us for the next month. They’re hilarious dudes and their music rocks. They’ll be releasing a new EP this summer, so make sure to check them out!

We also recently got to sit down with a couple of legends – Jason Cruz of Strung Out and Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music fame. Both have a lot of experience under their belts, so hearing their viewpoints on the way their respective scenes have developed was awesome.

One of our former guest-bloggers, Jimmy Pianka from Arrow to the Sun, wrote a great piece on coming of age in present times and how it’s influenced his band’s lyrical content. We love those guys and we’re very proud to call them friends.

Personally, I had a great time interviewing Sam Bradley, a folk-rock singer/guitarist from Canada by way of London, England. His show is a blast and he was both insightful and hilarious during our chat, so don’t miss it!

There’s a lot more great stuff in the works for the spring and summer so I hope you’ll stay tuned!

We’re always looking for more folks who share our passions to join The Record Rebellion team. If you’d like to get involved with our ragtag bunch of merry dudes and dudettes (or ladydudes, as writer Jared Bowers would say), drop me a line at alicia<at>therecordrebellion.com.

Have a great weekend! Catch you next week.

Keep Calm and Rock On,

Alicia

Tall Poppy Records is the creation of renaissance woman, Lee Lindsey. The independent record label which has now branched into Poppy Cafe embodies everything that Lindsey herself represents: passion, a love for nurturing and supporting great music, and family.

What started off as an independent label and recording studio in London, England, soon sprouted off into Tall Poppy Presents. Lindsey’s networking skills, and experience in the music industry helped her host dozens of extremely successful shows, featuring local and international musicians. It was obvious to everyone involved in the process that Lindsey was destined to bring amazing music to the world. After 4 years of sowing and watching Tall Poppy grow into her passion-driven business Lindsey decided it was time to transplant her family and the company to her homeland of Canada.

Although she had flown across the pond and landed in a very different Vancouver music scene, Lindsey was determined to make Tall Poppy flourish in the Great White North. Throughout the 10 years it has been running, Tall Poppy Presents has featured world renowned acts like Lee Macdougall, KT Tunstall, Marcus Foster, and Kenny Hess to name a few. The seamlessness of the Poppy events is all thanks to Lindsey’s attention to detail, impeccable hosting skills and commitment to making sure audiences can experience a night of unforgettable entertainment.

While at first glance,Poppy Cafe seems to be thriving, there are a few thorns that have threatened it’s very existence. Beneath Lindsey’s stunning exterior and warrior-like confidence, lies a woman who has been through hell and back. Supporting herself and traveling the world in search of work since the age of 15, Lindsey struggled to find her place in the music industry. After marrying and starting a family, she eventually divorced and was left to raise two children as a single mother. Just as Lindsey found her calling and sought to make her dreams a reality once more in Canada, her family home and recording studio burned to the ground in a freak electrical fire in 2007. If ever there had been a reason to give up, Lindsey had had several. And yet this brave woman with the heart of gold pushed on, rising above the tragedies.

So it’s no surprise that two children raised by such a strong and independent single mother would eventually begin to emulate her. Both her son Sam Bradley, and daughter Grace Lindsey are up and coming artists that have large online followings and dedicated fan bases. Bradley had only been playing live shows for a few years, when in 2008, his childhood friend Rob Pattinson used a song that they co-wrote in his movie Twilight. This gave Bradley a bigger following, though it has been his raw talent keeping his audience hooked. Bradley has toured Canada and USA several times, has been on television and radio, and is currently working on his third album release (which his huge following is desperately awaiting).

Grace Lindsey, has never really been in the shadow, despite her start as backup singer for her mother and brother. It was evident to everyone who has heard Grace sing, that she had a real gift for music, and that she too was destined for many successes in the music world. Lindsey has teamed up with fellow YouTube favourite, Sarah Louise, to form the band District Line. As a duo and as an independent musician, Lindsey continues to release videos (which quickly get thousands of hits) and she continues to captivate audiences at each of her live shows.

On December 22, you can be part of the Poppy Cafe magic, as Lee, Sam and Grace will be teaming up to play a very special holiday show. The multi-talented family will also be joined by the Alumni Seycove Choir (2006 Youth Choir of the Year), and Poppy Cafe will be collecting non-perishable food donations for The Salvation Army Food Drive. Without a doubt, this family’s passion and commitment to music, and Lee Lindsey’s gift for hosting live shows ensures this show is the best one you will see this holiday season. And of course, the Tall Poppy story is touching reminder that dreams come true, and that love and family are the true reasons to celebrate the season.

Denim has been around for quite some time now. Almost every single American owns a pair of jeans. Whether they are baggy, skinny, boot cut, or low rise, we all have a favorite. There have been so many changes with the way denim is made that it seems at some point it started to get out of control (bell bottoms, acid wash, extra baggy, etc). Jeans are one of those things that if you don’t have a good pair then they just don’t work out too well. Either the butt of the pants wear funny making you look like you have on a pair of your father’s jeans, or they are so tight that they look like they should be worn by your girlfriend (assuming that you have one). With the majority of companies having all these different kind of fits, cuts, and shades it can be hard to figure out what fit is a good fit for you, but hopefully I have found the answer. Throughout years of searching for the perfect pair of jeans for myself, I feel I have finally come across what I believe to be the “perfect fit”. This soon-to-be-legendary perfect fit is known as the “Slim fit straight leg”. This particular fit looks good on anyone and also gives you a “slimmed down” look that is flattering to almost any body type, but not “super skinny” that a lot of hipsters tend to wear. If you are wondering which brands are recommended for this, here are my top three picks.

-Levis 514: Not too baggy but not too tight. Sits nice on the waist and has enough room for comfort. Price $54.99
-Gap 1969: A great pair of jeans (I actually own four pairs) that feel amazing and can stand a fair amount of abuse. Also they are not too expensive (which is always a plus). Price $59.95
-Calvin Klein (low rise slim fit): A great pair of designer jeans that wont break your wallet. Nice and conservative, but add a slight looseness in case you are trying to avoid the “hipster look”. Price $69.50

So to all you guys out there looking for that next pair of favorite jeans, I suggest checking out the Slim fit style. Of course these three recommended brands are what worked for me, but just keep a look out for what may work for you, and remember…. Keep it simple. Happy hunting.
